MMOSS: New Hampshire’s Finest Psych Rock?

Last weekend was a fine one to spend in Somerville. Union Square was bustling hub of activity for music lovers with the annual Rock and Roll Yard Sale and the first ever Deep Heaven Now Psych Rock Fest. At the yard sale I spent $17 on vinyl and walked away with these gems after a solid hour of crate digging. While there were plenty of vendors selling cool poster art and vintage clothes, it was the dozens of peddlers who showed up with boxes of dusty old records who stole the show. Next year I’ll be bringing more dinero and a suit case for all my loot.

When the vendors packed up and the yard sale was over the crowd divided between Precinct and PA’s Lounge for the Psych Rock festival. My heart was set on seeing New Hampshire’s MMOSS. I’ve been listening to their first full length, i, for a good portion of the summer. With tight harmonized vocals, triply flute solos, and a strange Jefferson Airplane meets Strawberry Alarm Clock vibe it’s quite easy to fit into your lazy weekend morning soundtrack.

When they were setting up and I saw them roll out the Farfisa I knew everyone was going to be in for a treat. Unfortunately the sound at PA’s wasn’t being too kind to their vocals which was a darn shame. I could see that the band was frustrated with not being able to find one another’s pitches in the monitors while singing. Regardless, they played an absolute brilliant show and won over a few new fans who bought their limited cassette only release.
